iPhone Battle

I’m thinking about making a change in my life.

I’m thinking about going from this…

To this….

A phone for talking.

You can have a second to process this if you need to.

Okay, ready?

I love technology, I’ve always been a person who wants the new gadget, that doesn’t mean I always understand the new gadget. Ever since I went into the Apple Store a few weeks ago, I have been thinking about the fact that I don’t know half of the stuff my phone does.

But I still love it because it’s white and pretty and sends me all of my tweets.

Reasons Why I May Ditch The Smartphone:

  1. Money. As much as I like to pretend I’m a wealthy heiress, I’m not. A lower bill is appealing.
  2. I’ve been losing my phone on purpose lately, just so I can be a little disconnected.
  3. I’m really not sure I’m responsible enough for such a breakable object.
  4. I think it may be distracting from real life.

But, here’s my dilemma, how do I…function without my iPhone? Crazy question, right? But think about it, I’ve owned one for years. It is everything I use on a daily basis crunched right into a little compact piece of beauty.

It’s my…

  1. Radio
  2. Blog
  3. Facebook
  4. Map/GPS
  5. Weather Forecast
  6. Watch
  7. Fashion Magazine
  8. Bank Account
  9. Camera

The list goes on and on. If I get rid of it, will I have to get one of these….?

I’m pretty positive I can rock it.

Or these…

And does it mean I’ll have to learn to read an analog clock again? Because, ya know, they’re pretty out of style.

So this is what I’ve been battling lately. #FirstWorldProblems

I think going backwards, may be too hard of a thing for me to do. I’ll probably just keep leaving it places and keep hoping it breaks.

Would you ever go back?

Do you have a phone for talking? Does anyone have a phone for talking?

OMG that cartoon is hilarious! I love my iphone and I love gadgets too. Unfortunately I can’t go backwards b/c I need a good smartphone for work b/c I work from home at a computer so I def have to be attached to emails and social media all the time. Frustrating sometimes, but true.

Great post. I don’t think I can go backwards either. Like yourself, I do SO many things on my phone it consolidates everything for me. Maybe it would help if you looked at it in those terms…instead of you having to keep up with an ipod, watch, CD, magazines, etc., you only have to keep up with your iphone?

I am with you on this, I think I lose sleep, lose concentration in the moment from my phone. I think you would be making a smart decision.

Im not going to pretend for even a minute that I could go back or that I’d want to! Sounds completely horrid, I’m sure! Here’s my ugly reality: I like being connected. I don’t use my technology as a substitute for real interaction and I don’t think it hinders my reactions personally or professionally. I like that at the touch of a button, I can see where my child is on the map, I like that I can handle a work issue in 10 seconds when I’m not there instead of letting it fester for 2 days while I’m away!!

Are there drawbacks? Of course, but they don’t outweigh the benefits I feel I reap so I’m keeping my phone… In my pocket… Very close to me… Just in case I suddenly get bored!!!

I totally agree! It does take you away from the real world at times! I have mine and rely on it for everything. I know that’s not healthy though at all! I’d give you total props of you could ditch it! Happy Tuesday!

You need a data plan for pretty much every phone out there at this point. Do they even make phones without data plans? I’m not so sure. I wouldn’t want to go backwards and still be paying the same amount! Of course, you could find an old phone and make it yours. I don’t think I could do it.

OK, I’ll be the old fogey neighsayer. I don’t get the need to be “connected” all the time. I see young mothers walking their babies/ toddlers in a stoller in the park and instead of spending the time just talking with their child – showing them the world around them – they are busy looking at a stupid screen. The world around us is wonderful – why don’t you just look around and listen to enjoy it? I hate to tell you but the same is true of runners – if you didn’t have ear plugs in all the time when you run, you could hear the sounds of birds chirping and enjoy your surrounding more. (a good thing for safety also).

I agree. 99% of the time though, I don’t run with anything. I only take music if I really need a push, otherwise I don’t like having things in my ears.

Glad to hear you don’t run “plugged in”. You hit on one of my pet peeves. Sometimes people are too connected.

My husband and I purposefully avoided smart phones for years because we were worried that we would become too connected to our phones. When we finally decided to upgrade, we set firm rules for when the phones had to be put away (i.e. no tweeting during meals/dates etc.) which has helped us to disconnect. With that said, I love my smart phone – it has made several aspects of my life easier so I do not think I could go back to a plain phone.

Oooo interesting. I don’t know that I could do it. Though the cheaper part would get me.

I LOVE my iPhone! And no…I don’t think I could ever go back! My iPhone does everything for me!!! :-)

i couldn’t even imagine getting rid of my iphone it keeps me connected to everything and although I agree with you that it has become MY EVERYTHING and probably shouldn’t. I was watching one of those weird talk shows one day last week and they had a family on that became “unplugged” for a couple of days and the kids didn’t know what to do with themselves. They were crying and everything. Now they unplug every Sunday. That is what I would do if I feel as though it is going to far. I wouldn’t be able to get rid of it all together. It is also the sign of times if I would fall back behind it would take me forever to get back up to date!

wow you’re brave! I just happened to stumble upon an ipad so my husband is even more annoyed with me I’m sure…working on balancing it by leaving the bad boys aside for private time lol. I admire your bravery! SPA <3

Haha you know I don’t have a smartphone, yet, so yea my phone is just for talking. I’m still on the computer a lot though!

We don’t have them yet because of money, but I know that we will inevitably need to get them because eventually smartphones will be the only option.
